Cruelty to animals/people

Today, I read something on a friend’s facebook profile, which caught my attention ;  Najväčší kokot na svete je tento chlap !

100 000 people joined a facebook group about this idiot and talked about what they would do to him – punishment, torture, etc. I read their comments and most seemed angry, of course. It made me think about what we do when we read about cruelty to animals, or cruel treatment of people. Sure, we feel anger, but does that change anything? How can we make that anger something useful? There is no point saying : “there are good people and bad people in this world, and let’s go and do something bad to those evil people”. The idiot who threw the poor dog from the bridge was arrested. No-one knows if he regretted what he did, but he was not the only person in this world who did something cruel to an animal. It happens every day and in every country.

Many people own pets of some kind. I noticed that many DV-users have cats, rats and dogs. A lot of people have elderly relatives, who sometimes need hospital care, or in a nursing home. When we hear about some cruel action in the media, it should give us extra motivation to do something for our animals and people we know. Elderly people are forgotten by society and very few people care about them, not only in hospital when some of them are neglected by cruel nurses. Do you know what makes an old woman smile? It’s when she can gaze at your long hair. It reminds her of her youth when she had beautiful hair. I don’t know if animals enjoy the sight of long hair, but I know that animals enjoy the gentle touch of human hands. A person who has long hair obviously must be gentle when he/she combs long hair. This soft gentle skill which we learn as we care for our long hair can be applied when we stroke our cat, rat, dog, or other animal. It can also be used when we help our frail grandparent, or elderly person on the bus, or tram. Sadly, I don’t own any pet of my own, but when I see a cat, I try and stroke it, if I can see that it’s not afraid of me. If I see a horse, I stroke its mane and usually whisper to it in a soft voice. These actions make me feel I am doing something positive, even if it's a small action.  I’m responsible for my words and for my actions, so although I feel sorry when I read about animal cruelty, all I can, and should do, is think more carefully about how I behave when I see an animal. I'm tired of feeling angry. Nothing comes from anger except high blood pressure, headache and a bad mood. What else do we see here on DV that can make us behave better towards animals? Well, speaking for myself, I enjoy seeing animals on people's profiles. It's sweet to see someone with their pet, or just photographing their pet inside their home, or outside in their garden. Such a photo creates a warm feeling inside my chest.

Something I try and remember every day is that the smallest good deed will be rewarded and the smallest evil deed will be punished - either here on Earth, or in the afterlife [if you believe in Heaven and Hell]. Also, I think a huge difference between people living in Europe and people living in under-developed third world countries is that animals are treated with more respect in Europe than in Africa, Arabia and Asia. That is something people in the third world can learn and feel more inspired to do a kind deed for a stray dog, or cat.

I believe in justice and my last thoughts for this article is that I hope and pray that the men who poisoned my mother's dog, when she was a teenager, regretted what they did. The police never caught them and because of that experience my mother could never have any animal in her home. It was too painful for her. These people who are cruel to animals and other people - let them repent, or burn painfully in hell.
